Get into Teaching Internships 

We are delighted to be able to offer Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computing and Languages undergraduates the opportunity to earn £1275 in June / July 2025 on the Department for Education Internship Scheme to learn about teaching at a secondary level.

Wigan and West Lancashire Catholic School Direct is now taking applications for our Teaching Internships Programme for Summer 2025.

The programme aims to enable undergraduates studying for a degree in a STEM or MFL-related degree the opportunity to experience teaching.

Internships are available in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, MFL and Computing, allowing you to spend time in a secondary school before committing to teaching as a career. This might be the start of a fantastic career for you, with follow-up support for applying to teacher training if you decide it is the career for you.

The programme is part of the Get into Teaching service, supporting prospective teachers throughout their journey into the profession.

Applications are open now. The deadline for second round of applications is the 4th April, 2025.

The Programme

  • Will run towards the end of the academic year and will last for three weeks (23rd June – 11th July 2025)
  • Will offer structured activities to gain a deep experience of teaching, with access to one-to-one mentors, and opportunities to network with subject specialists
  • Will support you with an application for teaching if you decide it is the career for you.

All interns joining the programme will receive

  • An induction to the programme and our partnership
  • Initial safeguarding training
  • Subject Specific development opportunities
  • High quality mentoring
  • Opportunities to team teach
  • Wider opportunities in the life of the school
  • An enhanced DBS certificate
  • £425 per week of the programme

FAQs

Do I need to be Catholic to apply?

No – we are open to anyone who would like to investigate working in a faith environment.

Do I have to want to teach?

No – this is an opportunity to investigate life in a secondary school to help you to decide.

What if I decide it is not for me?

That is absolutely fine – we want you to make the right choices in your career and hope this will help you to see what a fantastic opportunity teaching is.

Can I apply if I already have an offer to train to teach?

No – this is for people who have not yet applied to train and there will be support to apply after the programme if you decide it is for you.
