School Direct is an innovative new route into teaching, which was announced by the Government in 2011 in the Department for Education (DfE) strategy paper Training Our Next Generation of Outstanding Teachers. School Direct has been designed to enable schools to take a leading role in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) whilst working in partnership with accredited ITT providers. It is a one year full-time route into teaching, with progress towards gaining a PGCSE with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) Recommendation.
Wigan & West Lancashire Catholic School Direct is run by a ‘Lead School’ on behalf of a network of schools based in the same area, in partnership with an accredited teacher training institution (Liverpool Hope University).
Prospective trainees apply directly to the Lead School, which is responsible for the recruitment process.
Once selected, trainees will work in schools within the network. They will train in the classroom supported by qualified teachers and mentors and will also spend time studying at Liverpool Hope University as theyprogress towards gaining a PGCSE with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) Recommendation. All routes into teaching must comply with the ITT criteria imposed by the Secretary of State and available here:
